Stream Wise spans state and international borders to protect and restore waterways throughout the Lake Champlain basin.

Stream Wise encourages landowners along rivers and streams to volunteer to safeguard drinking water, foster recreational opportunities, and protect vital land and habitat. Properties are assessed for best practices and awarded when they meet Stream Wise standards. When they don’t, Stream Wise Community Partners provide recommendations and support in implementing Stream Wise principles to achieve the standard.

The Image Farm teamed with a watershed expert and a landscape designer to develop the Stream Wise protocol and create a wide-ranging bilingual system of documentation, training assets, branding, and outreach materials. Our work has included brand identity and positioning, style guidelines and design templates, messaging and copy writing, a comprehensive website, social media design and management, tool kits, signs, and swag.

Project outcomes address two distinct audiences by supporting Stream Wise practitioners while informing and incentivizing the public. The program has quickly gained recognition among peers and engagement among landowners, shown by a more than 500% increase in both property assessments conducted and awards given. Organizations and agencies beyond the Lake Champlain basin have expressed interest in adopting Stream Wise in their regions.

  • The team led a project committee of federal, state, and provincial natural resource management officials and local watershed groups through a phased-approach to develop the program and materials, all of which align with riparian buffer regulations and guidelines for Vermont, New York, and Quebec.

    Community partner organizations received more interest in Stream Wise assessments than they had capacity for and now have waiting lists.
